Yes, it doesn’t matter how many overpriced hipster cafés open in your neighborhood, or how many Benedict Eggs you’ve ever had in your life.
Brunch is still amazing, and will always be.
Whether you’re planning a Sunday gathering with friends or simply want to indulge in a lazy weekend treat, brunch offers the perfect opportunity to savor delectable food while embracing the relaxing vibes of a late-morning meal.
In 2021, we wrote an article about the origins of this delicious invention, and we know you loved it. So we’re back with a new perspective on it + (of course) an updated list of the BEST brunch locations in the Algarve, in 2024.
Today we challenge you to become the queen or king of brunch at home, with a list of simple, yet fundamental tips on how to excel at the art of easy-going. Because — Brunch is a meal without rules, but not without codes.
Are you ready to elevate your brunch game? Of course, you are.
1. Plan Ahead
Brunch can be as elaborate or as simple as you desire, but planning is key to a successful and stress-free event. How many guests? Any dietary restrictions? Are we celebrating anything in particular?
Making a to-do list and organizing your shopping in advance will allow you to enjoy the morning with minimal fuss.
2. There’s no Planet B
Just before writing your shopping list, think about what you’ll do with what you already have. Too many fruits? Try a crumble recipe. Leftover bread? Make the best French toast. However, it’s better to aim just right — so you don’t end up with too much food. The planet and our eco-consciousness will thank us.
3. Bet on Fresh and Seasonal
Avoid strawberries in January. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are more nutritious because they are picked at the right moment and haven’t traveled much. Additionally, they are generally cheaper. Whenever possible, choose organic to avoid a pesticide-carrot-ginger cocktail at breakfast.
And you know, you don’t need to be a great chef to succeed with a homemade brunch. Some yogurt, homemade granola, fresh fruit, a vegetable cake, bread, and good jam will do the trick.
4. Be Brave and Take Risks
What’s so pleasant about brunch is having the possibility to pick and choose.
While classics like eggs Benedict and fluffy pancakes will always have their place, don’t be afraid to experiment. Therefore, offer a wide range, from sweet to savory and back to sweet again. Depending on everyone’s preferences, you might include scrambled, poached, baked, or soft-boiled eggs, charcuterie, seasonal vegetables, cereals, cheese, bread, and spreads.
Try incorporating regional or international flavors too. How about a Japanese-inspired miso soup? Surprising choices can spark lively conversations and make your brunch truly memorable.
5. Be bold in the Beverage Selection
Brunch isn’t complete without a stellar beverage lineup. Alongside coffee, tea, and Mimosas, consider offering a refreshing mocktail, freshly squeezed juices, or even fruit-infused water. A glass of fresh rosé can also be a hit.
6. Mindful Presentation
As the saying goes, we eat with our eyes first. Garnish plates with fresh herbs, colorful fruits, or edible flowers to add a touch of elegance. Unleash your creativity with the decor. There is no need to overdo it or bring out the Sunday silverware. Focus on a few refined details to maintain a relaxed vibe.
Some flowers, beautiful bowls, good napkins, and you’re all set.
7. Background Music and Ambiance
Music will impact the atmosphere of any gathering. Create a cool playlist that complements the brunch ambiance, striking the right balance between playfulness and relaxation. To make it even more special, cater the music to the preferences of your guests — they will love it.
8. Don’t Worry Too Much About the Looks
Unlike formal Sunday lunches, brunch is much more relaxed. There is no specific sequence of courses. Clothing-wise, sneakers are in while blazers stay in the closet.
The motto of the day: Let it be & Chill
9. Embrace the Outdoors
If weather allows, taking brunch outdoors can bring a breath of fresh air into your gathering. A garden brunch or a picnic-style set up in a nearby park will transform the overall experience, providing a picturesque backdrop for a lazy Sunday.
10. Forget you have a Watch…
Brunch usually starts between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. (for the late risers among us) and can last all day. It’s one of the only meals without any time limit, so please enjoy it as it is.
Brunch is more than just a meal. It’s an opportunity to create lasting memories with friends and loved ones. By planning, experimenting, and curating a thoughtful ambiance, you can transform an ordinary brunch into a delightful, unforgettable experience.
